My Child's Laugh

I have the most amazing son. In his fourth month of life he has started to enjoy laughing at almost everything (as long as he is not cranky). But the best part is that he laughs while breathing in, it is totally cute. So enjoy laughing inwards and suck on a pickle/cactus!!!

Why you shouldn't smoke...

...The Zombie Squirrel Apocalypse is almost upon us!!! Now, you might be a bit confused. This is understandable because you have been indoctrinated by tv, movies and public education that the zombie apocalypse would be driven by the human's natural instinct for brains. That's right, natural because every human has this desire but has the common sense to not crush any skulls. But in the end it will be the squirrels that usher in the end of mankind. At least they will try to since some humans will be immune and flat out ignored by the squirrels. Their apparent blood lust will not be for the erythrocytes but for the nicotine coursing through their veins.

Squirrels have been introduced to an unnatural source of toxins and stimulates that would otherwise be avoided if not for the human's presentation of them. Cigarettes are left lying around wrapped up as brown paper packages. This situation has caused an unnatural addiction to nicotine that is only building as smokers leave about the butts to their cigarettes. Soon squirrels will be thirsting for that nicotine and will quickly realize that nicotine is everywhere in the bodies of smokers. Their nicotine lust will turn into a type of bloodlust and smokers everywhere will hewn down by vicious teeth and stone sharpen claws of the sciurus carolinensis. Mean while 34% of the world will be quickly destroyed, including 54% of Chinese doctors. With so much carnage humankind will suffer. But still the non-smokers should survive and that is because of good life choices.

Yea!!!

I have only taught for a semester and I already have two rankings on ratemyteachers.com. I have an average of 2.5!!! (on a scale of 1-5, so not that good) That means I have annoyed at least two students this year enough to get them to rate me. Hooray!!! The question is: Would it be unethical for me to rate myself?

Oklahoma

Hi. I'm in Oklahoma. Some of the best things about Oklahoma include the people and the food. But the worst is the weather. So far no one has been able to tell me where the thermostat for outside is. It is really is too bad since I'm sure the outdoors would be a happening scene if only it were a bit cooler.

Scientists are dumb

Not all scientists are dumb though... just the dumb ones. I just finished watching "Expelled," a documentary by Ben Stein (from Win Ben Stein's Money or popularly know as the monotone professor in Ferris Bueller's Day Off). In this documentary, Ben goes about showing scientists who have been "expelled" from their positions in academia and research because of their difference in opinion regarding intelligent design.

A little background information will help to better understand this issue. Most scientists in power at universities and government agencies believe in evolution as the origin of species or life. Now there is a difference between the fact that things evolve and the theory (and I do mean theory) of evolution. It can be proved that species change over time due to natural selection, such as Darwin proposed, this is evolution. The theory of evolution, which some scientists adamantly adhere to, states that all life stems from one cell that randomly came together to form the first life form. This theory has not been proven (nor can it be). Intelligent design proponents assert that the possibility for random atoms molecules to come together independently and form life is so low that it is near impossible (like 1 in a googolplex or even at best estimates winning the jackpot on a slot machine 250 in a row). So instead of a random event, life was created by or at least guided by some sort of intelligent being (whether it be God, Allah, aliens, or something else... though I hope "Knowing" wasn't right). Intelligent does not state that one way or another is wrong or right but just possible (hey look open mindedness).

So in the documentary, the scientists are either strict theory of evolution believers, intelligent design believers, or neither but are punished because the said intelligent design might be a possibility. I am not going to say one is right or wrong but I will say that the scientists that do are wrong. Those interviewed in the documentary that are in favor of the theory evolution state it as a fact or a law based on the fact that evolution exists. However they base this law on theories that are unproven. Life must have randomly been generated and the current theories are primordial soup (a pool of all the essential elements is struck by lightening to form life) and grown on crystals (essential proteins are grow on the back of crystals). The former is all but disproved and the latter is now where near being proven. So obviously the scientists that believe the theory of evolution to be the immutable truth are just full of themselves because their law is based on unproven theories. As I am sure the same would apply to those that adhere strictly to intelligent design.

My point is this scientist need to accept idea where ever they come from. They don't need to believe them but they shouldn't shun them either. If it isn't right, prove or prove your own idea but don't shut it out because it is different. If we always received new or different ideas with hostility we would still think the world is flat and has four corners. Information should be free to everyone not just those in power or authority.

Randi: Hey! I cleaned it! Yesterday.
Me: He's swimming in his own poop.
Randi: I'd clean it again.
Me: You'd clean it again? That seems counterproductive...

A Peaceful Life

Many of life's greatest triumphs are the result of great character. Ordinary people can do extraordinary things by refusing to take life as it is and make a difference. These ordinary people are then no longer slaves of the mundane but free to challenge and try their character as and individual. The will to do more allows them to have great achievements and even triumphs.
Such is the case of our friend Leroy. Leroy was on old little fellow but of good report from all his friends. See Leroy lived under a tree that grew over a rock. This was the idea place from Leroy to live since other conditions were not conducive to his health. If he lived atop the tree the heat of the day in the middle of the summer would cause him much trouble and out side of the tree the wind and rain might cause him to melt. This is all due to the fact that Leroy is a Gummy Bear...

... Are you sure you want to be doing this? When have I ever had anything useful to say? Honestly, is this the best use of your time. You could be reading a story about a gummy bear that decides to become a wizard to free his friend Clark Bar from the clutches of Zero and his gang of Necco Waffers. Well, I'm sorry that that story does not yet exist. But don't worry I will soon bring it to you to help you from reading other pointless dribble, like my blog.

A little Polka in the Park

Well, I thought I would tell you all that this last Saturday was amazing. Conference was great! and I got to spend time with my sweetheart like all day. We went to Salt Lake City to spend time with Randi's sister and brother-in-law. While there, Randi let me teacher her how to polka and we polka-ed through the park back to her car. Wonderful time together!!!

Shoes and Feets of Strength

I just wanted to let everyone know how uncomfortable my feet felt as I walked to school today. I am all dressed up for an in class presentation so I wore my dress shoes. They normally are pretty good unless you wear them all day long, like I will be today, but I had only worn them for about a few minutes before they started to hurt. I think it was my socks. I know that sounds weird; socks are supposed to be comfortable and these were not. So as I walked to school my feet hurt and I put in the effort, the strength to get me where I am now, school.

Why are you still cutting onion?

Hey y'all! I'm doing great, except for the dreaded finals that are creeping up on me like a toddler after a doughnut left on the table. It makes me wonder; what should I learn to make my life better? So far I have come up with the following: how to deep fry a turkey, how to drive on the left side of the car and how to take in a suit jacket. Any suggestions?

If you are ever asked to solve all the world's problems...

... don't. Please refer that person to me because I have already take to time to solve all of the problems in the world (with the exception of the too many peeps problem, ONCE a year is fine!). Anyway, I'm just trying to keep up with the Jones, although I think we are on different interstates.

Oh no, two in one day...baby steps, baby steps

Hey, I just want to let everyone know that democracy is in jeopardy and there is not much Alex Trebek can do for us now (unless he wants to reveal his true identity). The California supreme court (lower case because they don't deserve capitalization) is about to hear a case that might lead to the nullification of Proposition 8 (the marriage protection amendment to the California Constitution). So a majority vote placed the amendment in the CA constitution that limits the definition of marriage to just heterosexual relationships. This was done in response to the CA supreme court claiming that a previous bill on the same issue approved by CA voters a few years earlier was unconstitutional. So what did the state do? They stuck it to the man (to be fair it was two women and two men that they stuck it to). In November of 2008 the state of CA put the marriage protection clause in the constitution (try and call that unconstitutional). OK so now opposition of Prop 8 says that because it was a huge change (not really just going back to where is was a few month earlier) that it should have gone through the legislature first and because it should be nullified. Hmmmmm, let's see, a majority of the state decides to make a law because four people don't like it. Now we take it back to those same four people to ask if it was ok to make. Uhh, where are the checks and balances? It looks like the Judicial system could rule our country if things go one way. Why do I say this? To ask you to remember our CA supreme court in our prayers, so that they might be fair to democracy. Well gtg... I have a job interview to get to.

So I kinda forgot I had a blog for a while. Now, that I have been reminded by my good friends, I'm going through the 9 step program of blog rehabilitation. I'm on step number 5. It has been a difficult path but I think I am getting closer to accomplishing my goal of becoming a blogger once more. Hurray....(fade out)!

Digital Blender?

Okay, so the other day I went to Walmart to buy some gloves for a Halloween costume. As I am sure you know if you ever go to Walmart for something random you'll probably end up walking through the whole store to find it (also because it is fun to press things with buttons and then walk away). On my Walmart wanderings I stumbled across something that greatly concerned me and I want to warn you all about it. I saw a Digital Blender! I know what you are thinking: "Why would they make a kitchen appliance to blend your digits? and who would want to put their hand in the blender to allow it to?" I don't know the answers to these sick questions. Protect yourselves from potential digit loss and avoid Digital Blenders at all costs!

Propsition 8 - It is about equality

I truly believe in equal rights. Everyone should have equal right to pursue the life that they want, within reason obviously. We should never allow anyone to do anything that would blatantly infringe on the rights of another. For example, we don't allow people the right to have the life of a homicidal maniac (I know it is an extreme example) because it would infringe on other's rights to life. So we can see that the rights of the individual are not always that they can do whatever they want. Nor is it allowed that if one person has the right to do something all may have that right too. Take for instance, public restrooms, I can not enter a woman's restroom without infringing on a woman's right to privacy. Yet half of the world can, is that a violation of my rights? No, because allowing me to do that would take away another's rights. The question to be considered is, If we allow someone the right to do something will it give more rights to the people or take away more rights? We want to have as a society as many rights as possible provided to as many people as possible. That is how we will achieve equality. It will not be that every individual has the same rights as the next (i.e. blind people can not have a driver's license (not that I have anything against the blind, it is just an example)), but will be that we allow society the opportunity to pursue rights that are equal to everyone in the same condition (everyone who doesn't have a physical disability that would prevent them from driving has the same right to a driver's license, assuming they don't loose that right some other way). So proposition 8 is to protect people's rights. How? By defining marriage as only between a man and woman we will be protecting the right of everyone who do not wish to condone any other type of relationship. If Prop 8 fails than it will be forced upon school that they treat homosexual relationships as equal to tradition marriage, even if parents are opposed to it. Shouldn't parents have the right to say what their children are taught? Churches that do not wish to condone the practice of homosexual relationships could be labeled as bigots and loose their tax exempt status and might be force to shut down their community programs (like adoption agencies). Shouldn't churches have the right to believe and practice what they want? I am tolerant of people that choose to live a homosexual life style but I choose not to condone life. I can not support it nor choose to recognize it as equal. Would Prop 8 take away rights from homosexuals? Not really, in California, homosexual relationships are already given the same legal right as marriages through domestic partnerships. All Prop 8 does is protect the rights of people who want to choose how they believe and what they teach their children among other things. It protects a definition.

I will say it straight out, homosexual relationships are not equal to heterosexual ones (especially not marriage). They are physically different in that they do not have the ability to procreate and advance society. It has also be shown that children that are raised by a father and mother (a man and a woman) are significantly better off that not. There are always exceptions to the rules, but if we lived on exceptions alone than we would have no basis to order. So why should we say that they are equal when they are not?
